Three Desserts and a Meat Fruit...

So, on Sunday whilst at a @popup4poverty meeting I was asked to fill in at the last minute for a dinner guest who very foolishly couldn't make it to the Mandarin Oriental at 9.30pm the following evening.

I was not going to turn this down, so I put on my most "comfortable" clothes (check their dress code) and happily joined Steve Paddock, @henryjprice & @AnthonyCrewe for a few refreshing Knightsbridge cocktails before we made our way to the restaurant.

Our table was not ready on time, so we were asked to take up some very comfortable chairs (for 3 of us) in the bar whilst we were poured more cocktails and fed with some very nice crisps & nuts. By 10pm we were ready for feeding and made our way to our table...not the best in the house, but by no means the worst.

Decisions were not made easily this night...so a lot of sharing was going to take place...after agreeing on a Chablis to carry us through our meal, we set about perusing the menu (see top pic) and deciding on the best course of action.

I started with the "Rice & Flesh" which was a delicious Saffron Risotto with small cubes of Calves Tail dotted around it...a good sized starter, very strong flavours and not filling enough for me to worry about sharing some of the "Meat Fruit" we had ordered for the table -
The "Meat Fruit" was incredibly rich...I am rather glad I did not plump for a whole one...presentation wise it is very impressive...technically a masterpiece....the parfait inside is almost mousse-like in its consistency, so sits high and proud on the buttery, salty toast and goes down very well.

Next up I decided on the "Black Foot Pork Chop" which was a little drier near the bone than I thought it would be, but for the most part, just right. The Spelt that came with it was so delicious and really bought a lot out of the meat when the two were combined on a forkful. We shared some (very buttery) beans and carrots to go with our main meals the other guys having Cod (fantastic according to Mr Crewe), Chicken (technically brilliant, but not exceptionally flavourful according to Mr Price) and Ribeye (very good said Mr Paddock, but he ordered it Rare when Medium Rare would've been a much better choice for the meat)

We were all prepared for the pièce de résistance that is the desserts...we had pre-ordered 4...yes....FOUR Tipsy Cakes (above)...and then also ordered another dessert each, which we rotated around the table at regular intervals...
Above: Brown Bread Ice Cream - delicious in every way, thanks in no small part to the Salted Caramel - amazing!
Baked Lemon Suet Pudding - a little heavier than I normally like my desserts, but very sharp and pleasant to share.
Above: Chocolate Bar - super rich and decadent...but the ginger ice-cream off-set the darkness of the chocolate very well, to create a flavour combination that reminded us all of Cardamom....strangely....
Above is the Taffety Tart...which none of us were expecting big things from (we nearly ordered cheese instead...) but the Blackcurrant Sorbet had all of our saliva glands rushing into overtime...it was incredibly sharp and tangy, like neat Ribena....a real palate cleanser for what was coming next....Tipsy Cake!
Oh...My....Word.....the Tipsy Cake was just about the sweetest thing I've ever had...sweeter than a Cinnabon....sweeter than a Builder's Brew....but the moistest, booziest, dish-clearing pudding I think I have ever had....you have to order this at least 30 mins in advance...as they meticulously coat the pineapple as it turns on the spit. I hate pineapple by the way...this was no different to normal...I tried some, it was horrid...no reflection on the chef, pineapple is just a flavour I cannot stand. But the cake...that memory will live on for quite some time!

After these two desserts, you can imagine the sight...four handsome guys sat around a table, all wondering if anyone would notice as they loosened the belt buckle whilst reaching for their wallets...we asked for the bill, ready to polish off the remaining wine and make our merry way(s) home....it was nearly 1am by this point.

But no....four of the above mysteriously arrived at our table a creamy Earl Grey concoction with biscuit sticks for dipping....apologies for the lack of info on this course, but it wasn't expected and I wasn't taking notes...actually screw it...I'm phoning the restaurant and checking....*phones restaurant*....right...it was a White Chocolate Ganache, infused with Earl Grey and served with a Caraway Biscuit! Thank you helpful kitchen staff!

To sum up....it was an incredibly decadent evening (they don't come around too often, so they are worth taking advantage of!) which was well worth the expenditure...I can thoroughly recommend it...if you can get in....there is a lot more choice than I thought there would be, service is top level and the whole experience really lives up to expectations!

London is full of great things! (As if you didn't know....)

On Saturday I was lucky enough to get a free ticket to go on a tour of the Olympic Site and my my my...how cool it was!
We were first shown around a small exhibition with videos and photos of how the site has developed from when we won the bid to today & even saw details on what was planned after the Olympics & Paralympics in 2012...that was the most interesting part - I really hope that all goes to plan as it has the potential to really regenerate that area of London!

The tour was great, a very informative Olympic Committee representative talked us around the site from the comfort of a coach and then surprised us all with news that we would be able to walk around inside the Olympic Stadium itself! As you can see, there is still a lot of work to do, but it is very impressive...

Every building from the Velodrome to the Aquatic Centre has been designed to be eco-friendly, efficient, easy to access and many of them will be staying behind (in one form or another) to be used to create new jobs and revenue in the local area afterward. Even the Athletes Village will be sold off afterwards and that place (below) is very impressive...Townhouses, Apartments, Beautiful Gardens....I'd love to live there!

From here it was clear what to do next...my joy for London at a high...the sun was shining, so I decided to take in the Thames Festival
I've never been before, but it was well worth a visit...so many different food stalls and they even closed Southwark Bridge for 2 huge strips of Street Party style seating across it and story readings, haircut stands..allsorts of cool extras....even the biggest Fish & Chip Cake you've ever seen!

It was a really busy day so after retiring to the BFI for a pick me up (coffee) I managed a further stroll (I'd walked all the way from Tower Bridge to the London Eye and then some today!) up to Camden to meet a friend for some dinner at The Engineer & a cracking bottle of red (recommended by @EdCJ_Francis)

Also, I saw a woman with a hat made of cress (below) ;-)
